WHEATON— Controversial criminal justice legislation was signed into law in Illinois on Monday, February 22. In response to the signing of House Bill 3653, which makes sweeping changes to law enforcement practices in Illinois, State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) issued the following statement:
“I’m not opposed to law enforcement reform or efforts to increase accountability – that’s an important conversation for us to have, but this legislation is not the way to achieve those goals. The people of Illinois deserved for this to be thoroughly vetted with all stakeholders at the table. Instead, the majority party ignored our legitimate concerns, cut off debate, and forced a vote. That is not the way to produce good public policy. I’m disappointed the Governor chose to sign this legislation today.”
