Session Update: We Need to Invest in Kids

Despite the calendar saying we were supposed to adjourn this past Friday, we still have work to do in Springfield. In fact, we haven’t even seen a working version of the budget yet.

I am hoping and praying that the Invest in Kids Tax Credit Scholarship makes it into the budget and receives funding so that these students from the Kingswood Academy, or these parents from a local Ukrainian school, can continue benefiting from the successful program.

Invest in Kids Tax Credit was passed as part of Illinois’ Equitable School Funding Formula in 2017, and it brought a beacon of hope for low-income and working-class families in our state. The program’s mission is straightforward yet impactful: provide privately funded scholarships to non-public K-12 schools for students who would otherwise struggle to afford it. For those generous enough to donate, the program offered a 75% tax credit on their contribution. In other words, it was a win-win proposition, making quality education more accessible while incentivizing charitable giving.

I will continue updating you all on the final days of session and will keep fighting for the rights of children and their parents!
