Springfield, IL – State Representatives Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) and William Hauter (R-Morton) conducted a live demonstration on the Illinois House floor to showcase the proper use of Narcan, the lifesaving medication designed to reverse opioid overdoses.
Narcan (naloxone) is a user-friendly and safe nasal spray that can rapidly restore normal breathing in individuals experiencing an opioid overdose. The product’s straightforward design makes the administration easy for anyone, even those without medical training.
“Understanding how to use Narcan is crucial in our fight against the opioid epidemic,” said Rep. Grant. “By equipping our communities with this knowledge, we can save lives.”
Rep. Hauter articulated that Narcan is a life-saving medication and is the antidote to respiratory depression caused from an opioid overdose. He stressed that administering Narcan can be a life-saving maneuver and is completely safe with no negative side effects.
The demonstration emphasized the ease of Narcan’s use:
Identify signs of an opioid overdose, such as unresponsiveness or slow breathing.
Administer Narcan by inserting the nozzle into one nostril and pressing the plunger.
Call 911 immediately after administration.
A video of the full demonstration is available for public viewing here.
