SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) has reintroduced legislation (HB1638) to help combat prescription drug abuse by requiring individuals to present a photo ID when picking up legally prescribed Schedule II controlled substances from Illinois pharmacies. This measure aims to prevent highly addictive medications, such as prescription opioids, from falling into the wrong hands.
“Opioid addiction continues to devastate families and communities across Illinois,” said Rep. Grant. “This simple step of requiring a photo ID when picking up these powerful medications will make it harder for bad actors to misuse or divert them and help to save lives.”
Schedule II controlled substances are the strongest medications allowed to be legally prescribed and come with a high potential for abuse. Examples include: oxycodone, methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, morphine and other opioids. By verifying a patient’s identity, the legislation adds an extra layer of security to the prescription process and reduces the risk of fraud and misuse.
“This policy builds greater accountability and responsibility,” added Rep. Grant. “We need to do everything we can to address the opioid epidemic and ensure these medications are used as intended and by the patients who truly need them.”
The legislation was originally filed in the 103rd General Assembly but was not heard in committee. The legislation is now in the Rules Committee for the 104th General Assembly.
