SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) is standing with parents and families across Illinois in opposition to HB2827, aka the “Homeschool Act.” The bill advanced out of committee today despite widespread concern from families and would create new requirements for those who homeschool or send their children to private schools.
“This bill creates unnecessary burdens for families who have already made the best possible educational choice for their children,” said Rep. Grant. “Parents deserve the freedom to decide what works for their kids without added bureaucracy.”
Under HB2827, nonpublic elementary and secondary schools would be required to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Homeschooling families would also have to submit a Homeschool Declaration Form or risk fines and other penalties. Additionally, those that choose to homeschool would be required to provide personal information about themselves and their students to state and local authorities.
Thousands of Illinoisans have spoken out against the proposal, with more than 34,000 individuals filing witness slips in opposition. Many also traveled to Springfield to share their concerns with lawmakers.
“I’ve heard from so many families in my district and around the state who are frustrated by this bill,” Grant continued. “We should be supporting parents in their efforts to educate their children—not creating barriers that make it harder.”
While all House Republicans on the Education Policy Committee voted against HB2827, the bill passed committee and will now be considered by the full House. Rep. Grant encourages residents who oppose these new requirements to sign her petition and submit a witness slip at ilga.gov
