WHEATON, IL – State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) co-sponsored legislation to combat prescription drug abuse in Illinois by supporting a commonsense bill that helps ensure powerful medications like Schedule II controlled substances—such as opioids—are dispensed responsibly and securely.
Under the legislation, pharmacists would be required to verify the identity of anyone picking up Schedule II medications unless they are already known to the pharmacist or pharmacy staff. However, the bill also provides flexibility: if a delay in dispensing the medication could harm the patient and identification isn’t available, pharmacists can use their professional judgment to fill the prescription.
“This bill strikes the right balance between cracking down on prescription fraud and protecting patients who need timely access to critical medications,” said Grant. “It gives pharmacists a clear process while still allowing them to do what’s best for their patients in urgent situations.”
Rep. Grant has long supported efforts to strengthen public safety and protect Illinois families from the impacts of addiction and drug abuse. This measure is a step forward in the fight against opioid misuse while respecting the needs of patients and healthcare providers.
The bill passed the house of Representatives and awaits further action in the Senate.
