Rep. Grant Honors Benet Academy Boys Basketball State Champions

Springfield, IL – State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) proudly welcomed the Benet Academy Redwings to the chamber today, honoring the team for capturing the 2024 IHSA Class 4A Boys Basketball State Championship.

On March 15, the Redwings secured a nail-biting 55-54 victory over Warren Township, clinching their first-ever boys state title. The team is led by Hall of Fame Head Coach Gene Heidkamp, who has guided Benet to an impressive 421 wins over 17 seasons—second only to Chicago’s Simeon High School.

“Congratulations to Gene Heidkamp and the Benet Academy Boys Basketball program on securing the Class 4A State Championship,” said Grant. “These young men fought tooth and nail for their victory and deserve all the rewards that come with hard work” concluded Grant.

Benet’s winning legacy includes four state championship game appearances in the last 10 tournaments, making them one of Illinois’ most elite programs. The team’s coaching staff includes John Bok, Scott Veselik, Justin Enochs, Mike Rembert, Dave Kleinschmidt, and former state legislator Michael Connelly.

Off the court, Benet Academy also shines academically, boasting an average ACT score of 30. The young men on Benet’s roster have demonstrated excellence both in competition and in the classroom.

The House offered a standing ovation for the Redwings, celebrating their historic win and outstanding representation of Illinois student-athletes.
