Rep. Grant Opposes Record-Breaking Spending and Costly New Taxes

SPRINGFIELD, IL – As the 2025 spring legislative session comes to an end, State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) is voicing serious concerns over the passage of Illinois’ largest budget in history—totaling $55.2 billion—and the costly tax increases Democrats are pushing to pay for it.

“This budget is nearly $2 billion more than last year. Since Governor Pritzker took office, Illinois’ spending has exploded by almost 40% yet middle-class families in DuPage are being asked to pick up the tab,” said Grant. “Springfield is once again trying to tax its way out of its own mismanagement.”

The $55.2 billion budget that relies on over $1 billion in new taxes—including hikes on sports betting, vaping, and small businesses, plus expanded taxes on out-of-state and online sales. And while a package delivery tax didn’t make the final cut, it’s possible that more tax hikes are still on the table later this year.

Instead of reining in wasteful spending, state leaders are asking working people to cover the cost of new programs taxpayers can’t afford—including billions in benefits for non-citizens, while critical services for Illinois residents go underfunded.

To make matters worse, Republican lawmakers were cut out of major decisions—including transit reform and the budget process itself. “When one party controls everything, there’s no real accountability,” said Grant. “That’s not how a responsible government should work.”

Rep. Grant is urging residents to push back on the State’s FY2026 Budget and make their voices heard. “This isn’t just about numbers. People in our communities are doing their best to make ends meet—and they deserve a government that respects their paycheck.”
