WHEATON – State Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) will formally present the Illinois General Assembly’s House Joint Resolution 60 designating a portion of Illinois Route 38 in Wheaton as the “U.S. Army SSG Robert J. Miller Memorial Highway” during the Opening Ceremony of the Field of Honor event on June 30.
The ceremony will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Seven Gables Park, 1750 S. Naperville Road in Wheaton. Community members are invited to attend and join in honoring the life and service of Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton native and Medal of Honor recipient.
House Joint Resolution 60 of the 103rd General Assembly, sponsored by Rep. Amy Grant and State Senator Seth Lewis, designates the section of Route 38 between County Farm Road and Winfield Road in honor of Miller, who gave his life while serving in Afghanistan in 2008.
“Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller embodied courage, selflessness, and devotion to duty,” said Grant. “As my service in the Illinois House comes to a close, it is especially meaningful to help ensure his legacy lives on in the community he called home. This memorial highway serves as a lasting reminder of his sacrifice, his service to our nation, and the example he set for future generations.”
Staff Sgt. Miller grew up in Wheaton and attended St. Michael School and Wheaton North High School before enlisting in the United States Army in 2003. He served with the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) and deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On January 25, 2008, Staff Sgt. Miller sacrificed his life while protecting fellow soldiers during an enemy ambush in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. His heroic actions saved the lives of numerous members of his team and Afghan allies. For his extraordinary valor, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Rep. Grant will recognize Staff Sgt. Miller’s life, military service, and enduring impact on the Wheaton community during remarks at the Field of Honor Opening Ceremony.
