Rep Grant’s March Newsletter

Dear Friend –

Thanks for following along with my efforts as the State Representative for District 47. Please enjoy the March edition of my newsletter and as always, please reach out if you need any level of assistance from my office.

Legislative Updates

We are now 7 weeks into the 103rd General Assembly. I have been hard at work in my assigned committees and advocating for real change in Illinois. Some of my legislative proposals include an effort to pause tax increases for the state motor fuel tax; reduce redundant testing practices at the DMV; clarify the veterans property tax exemption, and expand adoption services. My office is always open to constituent led legislative initiatives. Please contact my team if you are facing a policy issue and we will be happy to help find answers.

Rep. Grant’s Committee Assignments for the 103rd General Assembly:

  • Adoption & Child Welfare
  • Elementary & Secondary Education: Administration, Licensing & Charter Schools
  • Housing (Republican Spokesperson)
  • Judiciary – Criminal
  • Mental Health & Addiction
  • Juvenile Justice and System Involved Youth Subcommittee

Rep. Grant Urges Colleagues to Support Disabled Veterans

I am urging members of the General Assembly to support my proposal to clarify Illinois’ Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption.

Currently, disabled veterans are allowed to apply for the state’s tax exemption, but only after they close on their home. Mortgage underwriters are required to count the estimated real estate taxes for the property against the veteran when they are qualifying the veteran’s financial status for the home loan. Despite Illinois having a tax exemption for disabled service members, veterans across Illinois are paying thousands of dollars in upfront real estate taxes. While the tax dollars will ultimately be refunded once the veteran’s tax-exempt status is formally approved, the process is counterintuitive and should be changed.

Disabled veterans have made significant sacrifices while in service to our country. The State of Illinois has recognized this sacrifice with our Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption. However, the current system for granting this exemption does not address the fact that the very same veterans who qualify for it are being forced to pay property taxes upfront when closing on a home.

Monthly Recap – IMSA & DuPage Children

I met with many stakeholders this month while in both the 47th District and Springfield. One group that I was very happy to meet with were student representatives from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. These young students spoke with me about their interest in STEM subjects and how IMSA prioritizes them in their curriculum. They also gave me insights into the school’s unique research opportunities that allow the high school students to study along with Ph.D candidates from prestigious universities like UIC.

Another group that I met with was the DuPage Chapter of the Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children. Pictured below are President Jan Munday (center) and board member Leslie Hampton (right). These women care so much about getting our children the quality education that they deserve.
