Rep. Amy Grant to Present Official Memorial Highway Designation Honoring U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller

WHEATON – Representative Amy Grant (R-Wheaton) will formally present the Illinois General Assembly’s House Joint Resolution 60 which designates a portion of Illinois Route 38 in Wheaton as the “U.S. Army SSG Robert J. Miller Memorial Highway” during the Opening Ceremony of the Field of Honor event on June 30.

The ceremony will take place at 7pm at Seven Gables Park, located at 1750 S. Naperville Road in Wheaton.

House Joint Resolution 60 of the 103rd General Assembly, sponsored by Wheaton lawmakers Rep. Amy Grant and Senator Seth Lewis, designates the section of Route 38 between County Farm Road and Winfield Road in honor of Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a Wheaton native and Medal of Honor recipient who gave his life while serving in Afghanistan in 2008.

“As I prepare to retire from the Illinois House, it is especially meaningful to help protect Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller’s legacy here in his hometown,” said Rep. Grant. “Robert Miller is an American hero who displayed extraordinary courage and selflessness in defense of our nation. This memorial highway designation is a lasting tribute to his sacrifice, his service, and the values he represented.”

Staff Sgt. Miller grew up in Wheaton and attended St. Michael School and Wheaton North High School before enlisting in the United States Army in 2003. He served with the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) and was deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On January 25, 2008, Staff Sgt. Miller sacrificed his life while protecting fellow soldiers during an intense enemy ambush in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. His heroic actions saved the lives of numerous members of his team and Afghan allies. For his extraordinary valor, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

State Representative Amy Grant will use her time during the June 30 Field of Honor Opening Ceremony to recognize Staff Sgt. Miller’s life, military service, and lasting impact on the Wheaton community.
